Vietnam and old cars

This past week I decided to be adventurous and try out some Vietnamese food with my family.  I was inspired by Food Network's NomNom food truck to find a banh mi in Houston -- basically a delicious Vietnamese sandwich with either pork, chicken, or beef and fresh vegetables (ours had carrots, cucumber, and cilantro) on a very fresh and crunchy roll.

After some googling...success!  A Vietnamese restaurant within 10 miles.
The sandwich was great, but I was even more excited about their popular drinks: bubble Tea!

I went to high school in the China town part of Houston, so I always saw classmates get these drinks off campus, but had no idea what it was.  Alas, I figured it out -- it's basically a fruit smoothie with tapioca balls at the bottom of the drink.  It was so weird looking, but actually really good and they had a ton of flavors!

I thought trying some crazy asian food would be the most memorable part of my week, but my brother raised the bar.  On Saturday while I was at work he drove to Conroe with his friend and bought a new car.

Actually, it wasn't really a car --and it definitely wasn't new -- it's really just a frame.  He and his mechanic friend are going to restore a 1929 Model A.  Let's just say it turned a few heads on the drive back to Houston.  He's so excited to have a major project to work on and build by hand.  I can't wait to see the finished product, but I'll show you the beginning stages.  If cars could only talk..

And lastly, I leave you with a random food fact I learned and tried this past week-- if you boil condensed milk in the can for 3 hours it turns into toffee.  You can then make a banoffee pie with it :)

  2. I love pho! You should try a place - I always get pork with vermicelli. I am the weirdo that orders my bubble tea with out the tapioca balls. lol

Ron would be so excited about what your brother is doing! He's gonna have a tough time buying parts. Is he going to try to buy parts for that car, or makeshift more recent parts for the car?

Is that the pie from Lost? In high school my friends made the pie from Lost for the season finale, and since I was sick and couldn't come over and watch they brought me a piece. I feel like that was what it was called...maybe.

  3. I'm not sure if it's the pie from Lost...I only saw a couple episodes. It's just bananas and the condensed milk that turns toffee-ish.

he's putting in new parts: new engine, wheels, all the works. too hard to find anything antique! he just needs to focus on his grades and not the car for midterms lol

i want to try pho! my grandpa actually had it in biloxi (so weird to be in Mississippi) but it looked super good!
