This past Thursday I had a new opportunity. I was chosen by my boss to go recruit for my company back in Aggieland. My coworker and I drove up Thursday morning and back Thursday afternoon, but it was such a fun experience.
Believe it or not, it was my first time back in CS since graduating. I absolutely loved my time at A&M and in that town, but I guess a part of me needed a "break" from the small city life I had the past 4 years. Well, absence sure does make the heart grow fonder because the minute we were driving next to campus I got really excited. It was like I was a freshman all over again.
We arrived and I was immediately impressed with how outstanding the career center services are for recruiters. We were met with students who escorted us to the main building (R.udder). I of course knew where I was going, but our new friend insisted she walk us so she could have something to do :) We got to the building (I couldn't BELIEVE the construction at the msc...no more breezeway!) and were shown where to set up. There were huge food spreads all over and everyone was saying "howdy". Seeing how everyone interacted and took care of recruiters made me really proud to be an Aggie..no wonder we made the list at #2 for getting jobs after college.
We had a successful career fair, and it was so fun to be able to talk to the students who had questions and collect resumes. I enjoyed being on the other side of the table because I've felt like I'm always the one on the job searching side. I met allllll sorts of characters -- normal, awkward, nervous, shaky...but it's truly amazing how you can determine if it's someone you'd want to hire all within the first 2 minutes of meeting them.
So as crappy as sometimes my job and hours feel, it was a humbling experience for me. I know not to complain when I've physically seen all the students dying for just any opportunity to try and get a job. I imagine what I was saw was just a fraction of the state of our country's unemployment..and that's a very scary and sad thing.
I think the best part of my day was our lunch break...we got to eat at the top of R.udder T.ower (11th floor) overlooking Kyle field. I'll leave you with my view. Whoop!
so fun!! i love going back to a&m to visit. i especially miss it here in raider country...last time i saw the MSC the whole thing was totally gutted. so crazy. glad you had a good time at the career fair!
ReplyDeleteI've only been back once last year. Hopefully I'll make it back this year for the KTB tailgate! I miss that place so much! I am a student ambassador for UTMB, so we help out on interview day giving tours and taking the students where they need to go. It is a very strange experience being on the other side of things. Miss you girl!
