I was so excited that today I was going to be able to get back in the gym...I had missed three days on the treadmill because of my stupid work schedule. I got to the gym around noon and about a mile into my run I get a phone call from a weird number. They left a voicemail...which for some reason weird numbers that leave voicemails always make me nervous...well it ended up being my boss.
"Beth we have an emergency..." My first thought is the building burnt down or someone died (I guess I always assume the worst)...well it turns out 2 people just called in sick and they were short on people for the shift. So instead of working a midnight shift tonight...I had to return for my fourth swing in a row (1.30-9.30pm). It's my least favorite shift, but I knew I needed to help out...so I rushed home, amazingly got showered and ready in 20 minutes and made it to work. I luckily had a good and fun crew to work with so it all ended well...but it was just a frantic afternoon...oh the joys of shift work.
Brian, my friend at work, told me about this story that I hadn't heard about and I thought I'd share...33 people are trapped in a collapsed mine in Chile. They're all stuck in a room about the size of a small 1 bedroom apartment..with 90 degree weather and 90% humidity. There's apparently about a 6 inch hole they're passing food, lights, games, and water through..but that's it. The problem is they're going to be stuck in there for another 3+ months while they figure out a way to dig through the solid rock to get them, and to keep morale high the trapped men have not been told.
I would go absolutely crazy!! I would be so desperate for hope each and every day, yet all the people on the surface know they'll be stuck in there for months. Chilean officials have had conferences with NASA and submarine officials to gather information on how to survive in small cramped spaces. Um..I think this is a little more drastic of a situation than the advanced technologies found on the space station. These poor men have nowhere to use the bathroom..barely any food...yet they're trying to occupy their minds with distributing dominoes and cards?! I really hope psychological and/or disease don't get to them. Many prayers go out to what is probably hell on earth for these guys. A really interesting story nonetheless.
I will definitely remember this the next time I think I've had a rough day.
goodness. i read a little about this but i didnt know the people down there hadnt been told how long it would take to get them out... thats such a crazy story. i cant imagine living in something like that for 3 months with no end in sight...
ReplyDeleteI haven't worked out too cause of my stupid car! Now it's fixed, but I already got out of the habit. lol
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad and scary! I think they should try to get them an iPhone at least for entertainment, although then they would find out they're not getting out for awhile. I hope none of them get sick!
